TO THE REFUGE UNDER THE VOLCANO
The Salvatore Citelli Refuge was built in 1934 in the north-east area of Etna. At 1740 meters above sea level on top of Mount Concazze, on an old crater dating back to ancient eruptions more than 3000 years ago. In 1934, Professor Salvatore Citelli, an internationally renowned otolaryngologist, originally from Regalbuto but transplanted to Catania, decided to donate to those with whom he shared his passion, and for them to the CAI, a refuge close to the Serra delle Concazze, just outside the pine forest, in order to facilitate the final attack on the crater from that side, via the Pizzi Deneri route. He agreed with the knight. Antonino Paternò Castello dei Marchesi del Toscano for the free concession of the land. The top of Monte Concazze was chosen, an ancient lateral crater in a panoramic position, the interior of which is now almost flat and could constitute an ideal clearing in front of the building. It was inaugurated on 6 October 1935 and was also entrusted to the Zafferano guide Peppino Strano, who ran it until 1975. It then went through a period of decline until the Catania section of the CAI decided to give it under concession to the Municipality of Sant'Alfio , so that he would always keep it open in the style of the association's alpine refuges. In 1987 it was identified by the Etna Park as Base Point N.15 and thanks to these agreements, the refuge was totally renovated in 2012. Today, the refuge is chosen by the majority of sportsmen and mountain enthusiasts who come here to wonderful ski mountaineering trips but also for simple or long trekking walks.

Breakfasts Upon request, we organize breakfasts at dawn, for all groups who want to enjoy the magic of dawn by consuming breakfast from a terrace overlooking the sea at 1700 meters.

The rooms have always clean bed linen and blankets; it is not necessary to bring a sleeping bag and a sleeping bag.
