The Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge at Lake Scaffaiolo is located at 1787 m in the culmination of the ancient glacial amphitheater of Corno alle Scale, the most important mountain in the Bolognese Apennines. The panoramic position a few meters from the shores of the lake and from the ridge, the natural border between Emilia and Tuscany, qualifies it as an important refuge of reference both for the Corno alle Scale Park and for the Regional Park of the Upper Modenese Apennines, in which it is entered administratively. Crossroads of many hiking itineraries and stopping place of the GEA (Great Apennine Excursion) and the Alta Via dei Parchi, paths that completely cover the northern Apennine watershed, it is frequented by hikers from many foreign countries who have always been passionate about our landscapes. During the winter season it is the highest refreshment point in the Corno alle Scale ski area. It is easily accessible from the Bolognese (Lizzano in Belvedere), Modena (Fanano) and Tuscan (Pracchia, San Marcello Pistoiese, Maresca and Cutigliano) sides, on a beautiful road network, by public transport from Bologna and Pistoia and by trains and buses. line. It offers bar service, restaurant with typical cuisine and overnight stay in a dormitory with 28 beds with shared bathroom and hot shower. It is possible to arrange the accompaniment with professional guides on routes of different difficulty and lengths of one or more days, in winter with snowshoes, with the possibility of opening also midweek by reservation for groups of hikers, ski mountaineers and school groups.

Reachable from Bologna, Pistoia, Modena and Florence in 2 hours and 15 minutes maximum.
- From Bologna take the Porrettana (SS64) to Silla. Left fork for Lizzano in Belvedere, Corno alle Scale. Then Vidiciatico, the Cà, Madonna dell'Acero, Cavone.
High parking in the Polle area in the Corno alle Scale ski area near the service center.
- From Florence, A11 to Pistoia, then follow the signs for S. Marcello Pistoiese, Cutigliano for access from the southern side of the Apennines.
Or from Pistoia follow the directions for Bologna up to Silla and from here read the directions for access from Bologna.
- From Modena, follow the signs for Vignola, then take the Panaro valley bottom (SP4) up to 1 km from Fanano. Junction with left roundabout for Lizzano in Belvedere, Porretta. At the Masera pass left to Vidiciatico then La Cà, Madonna dell'Acero, Cavone, then as above.
