Description

Passo Santner Refuge The Passo Santner Refuge is located at the apex of the west face of the Catinaccio and at the foot of the south face of the Croda di Re Laurino, in the immediate vicinity of the Vaiolet Towers, at a height of 2734 m. It was built in 1956 by the mountain guide Giulio Gabrielli from Predazzo who managed it in the following years. In 2013 the refuge was closed, but starting from summer 2019 it will be accessible again for mountain enthusiasts. The refuge is located in the heart of the Catinaccio group, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites since 2009 along with 8 other areas. The hut is located directly below the Cima del Catinaccio, the second highest peak of the homonymous mountain group. According to popular legend, the enchanting Rose Garden of King Laurin was located in the very place where the Santner refuge is located today. Even today the Catinaccio, at sunset, takes on the color of a garden of roses in bloom, of incomparable beauty.

How to get

Basically there are two alternatives to get to the Passo Santner refuge on foot: one following the Santner via ferrata and the other going up from Val di Fassa passing through the Vajolet and Re Alberto refuge. Via Ferrata Santner From Malga Frommer (1.743m) take the Laurin chairlift up to the Fronza Alla Coronella Refuge (2.339m) or alternatively you can do this stretch on foot along path n.1 (duration about 1.15h). Go around the refuge on the left and immediately begin to climb through a stretch of small rocks, partially equipped with a metal rope, which allows you to access a long detrital ledge. At that point the road divides and at the crossroads you must take the road on the left (path n. 542) towards the Ferrata del Passo Santner. The start of the via ferrata is located at the foot of the Catinaccio in the southwest wall. The Santner via ferrata, which is a classic of the Dolomites, has only a few climbing passages of the first degree of difficulty. To do this route it is necessary not to suffer from vertigo, to have climbing equipment and a sure-footed step. The via ferrata comes out at Passo Santner which is located a few meters from the refuge of the same name. Travel time from the Fronza Alla Coronella Refuge: 2.20 h Difference in altitude: 395 m from the Fronza Alla Coronella Refuge and 994m from the Frommer Malga From Val di Fassa From the beautiful town of Vigo di Fassa (1,440 m) you can reach the Ciampedie refuge by cable car . Alternatively, you can get there from Pera di Fassa (1,300 m) with the Vajolet chairlifts. In both cases, continue towards the Gardeccia Refuge, the Vajolet Refuge and Preuss up to the Re Alberto Refuge. The climb up to the Re Alberto Refuge is equipped with metal ropes. The last part of the ascent crosses the `Gartl`, the famous rose garden of King Albert, up to the Santner refuge. Journey time: 03.00 h Difference in altitude: 878 m from the Ciampedie Refuge
